JOB SUMMARY

This accounting position is responsible for auditing transactions, reconciling accounts, analyzing data and reports, and preparing journal entries and financial reports for Colorado PERA's member and benefit accounts. This position works under the supervision of an Accounting Manager.

 ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Performs account analysis on member and benefit accounts
  • Reconciles account balances to general ledger and financial reports
  • Prepares and analyzes financial and managerial reports
  • Utilizes benefits system to create reports for monthly close
  • Verifies data and prepares journal entries to recognize member and employer contributions, benefit payments and health insurance premiums
  • Audits transactions, identifies errors, researches and reconciles discrepancies
  • Corresponds with internal departments to resolve account discrepancies
  • Reports the status of unresolved issues to management as necessary
  • Communicates with co-workers to ensure that transactions are accurately set up and recorded
  • Maintains/updates procedures and initiates process improvements to contribute to the development and efficiency of the division
  • Assists with tax reporting related to retirees, benefit recipients and refunded accounts
  • Cross trains within the department in order to provide backup where needed
  • Participates in training and educational opportunities for ongoing professional development
  • Assists with certain areas in preparation and review of annual financial report
  • May prepare and/or review PERA-affiliated employer correspondence
  • Provides requested information to internal and external auditors
  • Maintains regular and prompt attendance in the workplace
  • Performs other duties as assigned

 QUALIFICATIONS

  • A demonstrated expertise in the job functions that is supported by work history and/or education, equivalent to 1-3 years of experience
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance preferred
  • Demonstrated knowledge and application of accounting principles in an accounting environment
  • Knowledge and prior experience working with an accounting software package; experience with PeopleSoft Financials and nVision preferred
  • Ability to prepare journal entries
  • Ability to process transactions accurately and timely, with attention to detail
  • Ability to validate the accuracy of work prior to review
  • Ability to work independently, with minimal supervision, and within a team environment
  • Ability to draw on prior experience to determine recommended actions to resolve accounting issues
  • Effective interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Basic to intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Excel
  • Proficiency with ten key calculator
  • Ability to read and interpret written policies and utilize professional judgment
  • Demonstrated capability to manage multiple priorities and meet competing deadlines

 WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Standard office environment with regular computer and telephone use
  • Occasional lifting, carrying or moving material in excess of 10 pounds
