JOB SUMMARY

This position contributes to the day-to-day account operation of PERA's retirement programs. Responsibilities include verifying, calculating, and auditing member account information for processing benefits according to legal and regulatory compliance standards. This position is also responsible for communicating information regarding the PERA defined benefit retirement plan, PERA's healthcare plans, and other PERA information to members in individual counseling sessions.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Determines benefit program eligibility based on member tenure and compliance with state and federal statutes and rules governing PERA.
  • Performs defined benefit calculations including benefit estimates, service purchase agreements, retirements, and adjustments
  • Utilizes analytical reasoning skills and proactive research methods to assist with and prepare for member interactions Explains benefit program information to members and retirees via in-office or out-of-office meetings, telephone, e-mail and/or written correspondence
  • Manages multiple interruptions on a daily basis, while maintaining a high level of accuracy in work product
  • Prepares reports and presents account information in a meaningful and logical manner
  • Utilizes active listening techniques and knowledge of state and federal statutes and rules governing PERA to provide exceptional customer service
  • Within established guidelines, investigates and resolves elevated issues
  • Collaborates with staff and management in developing recommendations to resolve complex issues
  • Responsible for member data entry, information retrieval, and mailings
  • Participates in training and educational opportunities for ongoing professional development
  • Maintains regular and prompt attendance in the workplace
  • May be assigned to a process team in a specialty area such as disability or survivor benefits.
  • Carries out other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A combination of education and experience equivalent to 3 years of insurance and benefits administration
  • Analytical and detail-oriented with an aptitude for math
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills with knowledge of proper English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation
  • Demonstrated approach to handling sensitive and/or confidential information
  • Professional business demeanor strongly desired
  • Ability to prioritize, organize and work with minimal supervision
  • Capable of working successfully both independently and within a team-focused environment
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office software
  • Certified Retirement Counselor (CRC) designation or Retirement Enrichment Program certification within 3 years of completing new-hire training
  • Ability to travel on a limited local basis as necessary for business needs

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Standard office environment with daily computer and telephone use
  • Occasional lifting, moving, or carrying materials and equipment weighing in excess of 20 pounds
  • Applicants must be available to work Monday through Friday 7:30-4:30 and occasional Saturday mornings
